What Is National Water Hygiene Training?

The National Water Hygiene Training Course is a passport scheme developed in partnership with all major UK water companies. It provides the standardised knowledge and hygiene awareness required for any individual working on clean water networks.

The scheme ensures that workers understand:

  • The importance of protecting public health
  • The risks associated with waterborne diseases and contamination
  • Hygiene protocols for handling water supply infrastructure

Participants completing the training are registered with EUSR and receive the official Blue Card, which demonstrates competency and industry compliance across a wide range of utility operations.

Modules What you will learn Industry Application

1

The importance of water To reflect and explore the critical role of clean water as both a vital food source and the foundation of a healthy society. Builds a vital safety-first mindset for anyone working near the water network.

2

Water as a carrier of disease Learn how water carries disease, how modern safety standards evolved, and how to prevent contamination. Helps field teams spot biological hazards like stagnant zones before pathogens enter the system, preventing costly boil-water notices.

3

Potential contamination and its consequences Identify where water contamination happens across the UK water industry and the critical impacts of a system failure. Equips teams to recognise environmental and site-specific risks (such as agricultural runoff, trench flooding, or hazardous materials) before work begins, ensuring proactive site management.

4

Preventing contamination Learn practical steps and industry habits to safeguard the clean water supply and prevent contamination. Translates theory into daily action, teaching precise rules for tool sanitisation and hygiene to stop cross-contamination.
