If you’re working in the water industry, you’ve probably come across two common training schemes: SHEA Water and National Water Hygiene. But which one do you actually need, and is it possible you need both?
In this guide, we’ll explain the differences between SHEA Water and National Water Hygiene training, help you determine which applies to your role, and walk you through how to book the right course with Jason Rowley Training.
What Is SHEA Water Training?
SHEA Water is part of the wider Safety, Health and Environmental Awareness (SHEA) framework. It has been developed specifically for professionals working across the UK’s water industry, including those accessing operational sites, construction areas, and wastewater infrastructure.
This training is aligned with the Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) and consists of eight core modules covering:
- Workplace responsibilities
- Environmental awareness
- Risk management
- Occupational health hazards
- Emergency response procedures
- Water industry-specific content
- Highway working
- Clean and wastewater operations
On completion, candidates receive an EUSR SHEA Water registration and SHEA Water card, which remains valid for three years.
Best for: Professionals working in utilities, civil engineering, sewerage, water treatment, and those requiring access to CSCS-controlled operational sites.
What Is National Water Hygiene Training?
Often referred to as the ‘Blue Card’, National Water Hygiene training is a mandatory requirement for anyone working directly on or near the clean water network.
The course covers:
- Good water hygiene practices
- Preventing contamination
- Understanding the public health risks
- Operating safely around drinking water supplies
Upon successful completion, delegates are registered on EUSR and issued the National Water Hygiene card, valid for three years.
Best for: Site workers, contractors, engineers, or technicians working on service reservoirs, clean water mains, treatment works, and related infrastructure.
What’s the Difference Between SHEA Water and National Water Hygiene?

| EUSR Registered | Yes | Yes |
| Valid For | 3 Years | 3 Years |
| Course Format | Online or classroom-based | Online or classroom-based |

| Required For Clean Water Access? | Not sufficient alone | Yes – mandatory |
Do You Need Both SHEA Water and National Water Hygiene?
In many cases, yes, you may need both. Here’s why:
- National Water Hygiene is required for restricted operations involving drinking water.
- SHEA Water provides a broader overview, covering environmental responsibilities, risk control, and industry-specific health and safety.
- Some roles involve cross-sector work (e.g. streetworks, drainage, clean water access) where dual certification ensures compliance with multiple entry and safety requirements.
If your role involves construction or excavation in the water industry or requires CSCS site access, you’ll need SHEA Water.
If you are working on or near the clean water supply network, then National Water Hygiene is non-negotiable.
Which Course Should You Start With?
If you’re new to the water sector, or unsure of the access levels required in your role:
- Start with National Water Hygiene if your work relates directly to drinking water or clean water infrastructure.
- Take SHEA Water if your work involves construction, site supervision, or wider utility access.
