The National Water Hygiene Training course plays a vital role in protecting public health by equipping individuals with the knowledge to prevent water contamination. This training ensures that water company employees, subcontractors, and anyone involved in the utilities sector register understand the importance of maintaining clean water supply networks. From preventing chemical contamination to avoiding waterborne diseases like dysentery and persistent diarrhea, the course emphasises good water hygiene practices that align with the expectations of the Drinking Water Inspectorate and other key stakeholders in the UK water industry.
A National Water Hygiene Card, also known as the blue card, is essential for those working within the water industry. It signifies successful completion of the training course and proves that individuals have the required knowledge to handle high-risk scenarios safely. The card demonstrates proficiency in areas such as sampling and audit processes, managing water pumping stations, and preventing the spread of waterborne diseases. In addition to practical skills, the course includes a standardised health screening questionnaire to ensure workers are symptom-free from conditions like vomiting, jaundice, or prolonged unexplained fever before entering service reservoirs or handling contaminated water.
The National Water Hygiene EUSR scheme is a vital part of the UK water industry, ensuring that those working with clean water sites and water supply networks follow best practices to prevent potential contamination.

There are no formal entry requirements, but all candidates must have a basic understanding of written and spoken English.
You will need a stable internet connection, a laptop or desktop computer. A tablet that is 10” or greater may be used. Mobile phones cannot be used under any circumstances. You should be in a room on your own but if this is not possible headphones must be used.
You will be sent an answer sheet that you must print out. It is a multiple-choice tick box style sheet and once completed you will take a photo and submit to the trainer.
In compliance with the Energy & Utility Skills Register, SHEA EUSR registration provides evidence for an engineer that they are knowledgeable and understand work safety in an operational environment. A EUSR registration card qualifies an operations worker to access and work in a site related to the gas, power, and telecommunications sectors.
National Water Hygiene registrations last for three years, from the date of the course.
3.5 Hours
The cost of training includes EUSR registration, a virtual card as well as a plastic smart card.
All EUSR SHEA cards carry the CSCS logo giving the individual access to operational sites.
