SCO Renewal Training: What You Need to Know Before Your Registration Expires

SCO Renewal Training

When working on the UK gas network, your responsibilities don’t stop once your initial training is complete. Maintaining compliance with safety standards and the Safe Control of Operations (SCO) scheme requires keeping your certifications up to date. If your current SCO registration is due to expire, it’s essential to act early and prepare for your renewal. At Jason Rowley Training, we deliver EUSR-approved SCO Renewal training designed to help gas professionals remain compliant, confident, and competent in their role.

Why Is SCO Renewal Training Important?

The Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) requires SCO registration to be renewed every five years. This isn’t a formality – it ensures you continue to demonstrate the same level of technical knowledge and safety awareness needed to work safely under the SCO scheme.

Gas network procedures evolve with changes in legislation, technology, and best practice. Without regular refresher training, even experienced professionals risk falling behind in their understanding of updated processes or revised SCO procedures. Renewal training gives you the opportunity to revisit key responsibilities, sharpen your decision-making, and strengthen your understanding of gas safety systems.

What Modules Can Be Renewed?

At Jason Rowley Training, we support the full SCO renewal programme. You can renew the following modules:

  • SCO Core
  • SCO Permit to Work (PTW)
  • SCO Non-Routine Operations (NRO)
  • SCO Routine Operations (RO)
  • SCO Form of Authority (FOA)

If you hold any of these qualifications and they are approaching expiry, you should book onto the appropriate renewal course. Not sure what you need?
Get in touch with our team and we’ll help you confirm your current SCO registrations.

What Is the Format of SCO Renewal Courses?

Renewal training is shorter than initial training and typically takes place over a half day per module. Depending on your organisation’s needs and your own availability, we can deliver this training either in person at our Manchester centre or online via a virtual classroom.

During the course, you’ll review:

  • Key responsibilities under SCO gas network procedures
  • Risk-based management and control measures
  • Revised SCO procedures and changes in documentation
  • Accurate completion of permitry and authorisation forms
  • The current expectations for named competent persons and authorising engineers

You’ll also complete a multiple-choice knowledge-based assessment. This assessment confirms that you still meet the EUSR competency requirements. Your results are submitted to EUSR following successful completion.

When Should You Book Your SCO Renewal?

SCO registrations remain valid for five years. It’s best to begin the renewal process three to six months before your expiry date. This allows time to:

  • Schedule a course at a time that suits your workload
  • Review any learning materials or scheme updates
  • Ensure continued access to operational sites without interruption

If your registration expires, you may be removed from site access lists or required to repeat the full initial training – both of which can delay your work and increase costs.

We recommend checking your EUSR profile or speaking with your company’s compliance team to confirm when your renewal is due.

Who Should Take This Course?

SCO Renewal training is designed for:

  • Named competent persons working under the SCO scheme
  • Authorising engineers responsible for issuing permits or overseeing gas network operations
  • Supervisors and managers who are involved in planning or reviewing gas operations
  • Contractors and employees of gas distribution companies who need ongoing access to live gas network assets
